Empowering Youth Small and Medium Enterprises in Bor, Jonglei State

In Bor, Jonglei State, Tukul Africa is empowering young entrepreneurs to build sustainable livelihoods through the UNDP’s Youth Enterprise Development and Capacity Building Project; an initiative funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

As part of the project, Tukul Africa has capacity-built 75 youth-led Micro and Small Enterprise (MSE) groups with financial literacy and entrepreneurship training and continues to provide financial mentorship and coaching. These groups are engaged in salty and dry fish production, food items and restaurants trade, vital sectors that supports food security and local commerce in the region.

Each group has benefited from comprehensive financial literacy training, strengthening their ability to manage and grow their businesses effectively. In addition, they have received interest-free to expand operations, improve production, and access new markets. Each of these groups also belongs to a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), which has strengthened their saving discipline and provided an additional safety net for business and family needs.

The results have been inspiring. Each enterprise has created employment for 3 to 5 young people, providing stable income opportunities and contributing to the economic recovery of Bor and surrounding areas.

“Before the training and loan, our business was small. Now we have more stock, more customers, and we’ve been able to hire others. It’s a real change for our community.”
– Beneficiary, Akutnhom MSE Group

Through this partnership, Tukul Africa continues to demonstrate the power of youth-driven entrepreneurship and skills development as engines of inclusive growth and resilience in South Sudan.
